If you really want to regain the most out of viewing this relate, don’t originate the mistake many of these Amazon reviewers do, by either assuming the politics of Cimino et al or using your enjoy pro- or anti-America agenda as a considerable yardstick. Because really this film isn’t proselytizing a particular viewpoint, unlike Cimino’s disastrous followup HEAVEN’S GATE. And don’t mediate of it solely as a war movie. Actually, it’s a lot like GONE WITH THE WIND: an epic-scale contemplate at life and society in a specific set and time in the past (in this case, 1968, ten years before the film was made), and how folks send off their high-spirited young men to a war that no one pays a tall deal of mind to - and how that war shatters not only the young men but the world they left tedious, forever. The wedding scene IS long and in lesser hands on either side of the camera would be a boring weight but Cimino and lensman (sorry) Vilmos Zsigmond frame it in reverent widescreen grandeur, and a once-in-a-lifetime cast nails every character nuance and conversational tic, so that the scene flows on and on, vibrant with life and perfectly evoking not only a rust-belt town but the fast-fading rust-belt values of the nation. Besides, with a cast like this movie’s, working at the height of their powers with inspired material, you really don’t want scenes to demolish. When the movie segues to Vietnam, the tone shifts to dismay and finally surrealism. Many contemplate this part of the movie horribly racist, but that’s a obliging, kneejerk-liberal reaction. These aren’t Harvard freshmen, they’re barely-educated steeltown kids being sent to a faroff jungle to destroy VC, who secure captured & tortured by the men they are trying to end. For enlightened liberal pieties to impart the dialogue or the tone of these scenes would be criminally untrue. That’s probably what makes this a large flick, however, that right-wingers can loathe it for its sure liberalism and the bleeding hearts can abhor it for its reactionary jingoism. Ain’t consensus fantastic? Check your maintain politics at the door before watching this (widescreen version only!) and devour four transcendent performances by DeNiro, Savage, Walken & Streep, plus the unhurried John Cazale doing his patented sweaty-weasel turn as an added bonus.

Cimino’s THE DEER HUNTER is difficult to characterize. The film opens with a long and complex sequence depicting events surrounding an clarify wedding in a steel mill town–and then vaults several of that community’s young men into a hellish vision of the Vietnam war, from which the survivors return so completely changed that they no longer fit into the community from which they originally came.

There are several principal issues with THE DEER HUNTER. When it was first released, audiences were very determined about the film–but they complained about the opening “home town” sequence, which they described as listless and over-long. The studio accordingly edited the sequence to half its novel length–but when the edited version was shown, audiences were considerably less alive to about the film in general and complained that it lacked impact, and the edited section was restored. Audiences mild complain about the opening sequence, seldom realizing that it provides the point of comparison that makes the remainder of the film so powerful–and in any case, this fact is something that can only be recognized by viewers in hindsight, a circumstance that does not befriend them weather the first fraction of the movie when they actually contemplate it. Many also complain that the status is incredible. Once the three leads (Robert De Niro, John Savage, and Christopher Walken) come Vietnam, they are unexpectedly reunited unprejudiced in time to be captured and tortured together. In the film’s most famed scene, the three are forced to play Russian roulette against each other–and although they race, one is maimed (Savage) and the other (Walken) so emotionally traumatized that he vanishes into Vietnamese underworld, where he re-enacts the panic of his torture by playing Russian roulette as a gambling game.

But for all its glitchiness, THE DEER HUNTER is a remarkably intense, remarkably disturbing film–particularly when the discharged De Niro returns home only to glean himself surrounded by traditional friends whose ‘broads and beer’ lives seem incredibly trivial in comparison to his fill experience. He has changed; they have not; what has been lost cannot be recovered. But there can be a sort of redemption through an acceptance of the change that has been forced upon him–and by trying to bring others who have suffered to that same acceptance. Cimino’s direction and overall vision is loose, to say the least, but he draws amazing performances from an wonderful cast. De Niro gives what may be the most subtle performance of his entire career in this film. Christopher Walken’s performance (he won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar) is justly famed, and although often overlooked, John Savage is every bit his equal; Meryl Streep is also memorable in one of her earliest big-screen roles. And bitter as the film is, it collected speaks of honor, integrity, hope, and bonds of friendship and community that can never be broken. Deeply flawed–but a masterpiece nonetheless.

Just What I Wanted5
I got this great pair of Nikon Eagleview 8-24×25 Zoom II Binoculars as a gift from my Mom & Dad for Christmas. I’ve had several other pairs, but never this compact and powerful. The zoom is VERY smooth and keeps good focus throughout. Nice and lightweight, they did well as ‘opera glasses’ on my visit to the symphony last week. And I’m getting a better close-up of my favorite birds. The ‘field’ is not as good as with dedicated wide-view optics, but you can’t complain. Just What I Wanted

Excellent sharp views for sightseeing or other uses.5
We bought these binoculars to use for our honeymoon cruise, and we were very pleased. In particular, we love the eyepieces that raise and lower for use with or without glasses (helpful for both eyeglasses and sunglasses users). Secondly, the width of the binoculars adjusts for the space between your eyes, allowing a custom view for each user. Also, the binoculars are small and lightweight, making them perfect for travel. Finally–and most importantly–the binoculars provide a clear, sharp picture that stays relatively stable even at higher magnifications. Highly recommended for the casual user.

BUY THESE!5
I was absolutely astounded with the amazing clarity of these binocs. Tremendous zoom range, small enough to pack anywhere, and again, tremendous, stunning clarity. Buy these!

If you saw “Golgo 13: The Professional,” or even if you played the watered down NES games, and you’re hoping for more of the same, peer elsewhere. This movie lacks the storyline, style, and appeal of the novel, instad going for an anime-sex overload, with a few exploding heads for flavor.

the suitable news is that Golgo 13 is on DVD and there is an involving commentary on an alternate audio track. the animation is in line with the character designs for Golgo 13.

unfortunately, this is nowhere come as compelling a sage as the excellent Golgo 13: The Professional, the other Duke Togo anime released by Urban Vision.

Togo never misses, and as a technicality he doesn’t here but i don’t lift ever seeing him hesitate so grand, come by so easily distracted, and have so many ‘incidental’ blocks on his target. if you’re a fan of the manga and if you’ve seen G13: The Professional, you gaze the preparations and planning he labors over to regain the hit. IMHO, the appeal was his clarify setup to gain that ‘impossible’ shot; in The Professional, the bright twist was that he was targetted to be taken out so is forced on the defensive — chased by other high caliber (and odd) hitmen.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Golgo 13 - Queen Bee! Click Here

here, Togo seems amateurish. there is nothing that defines him from any other hitman; the Queen Bee, herself, was not a very compelling character since they never really worked the child/children perspective of her character.

there is an even greater amount of sex and violence — probably needless as well but to me in excess — in this OAV, more like something from Crying Freeman, as one reviewer mentioned.

the site is horribly cliche and most of the set twists were pointless (Minor SPOILER: contemplate how indispensable she set aside her revenge as oppose to getting funding for liberation army — even the ending was unpleasant, it was unbiased a shooting gallery to complete the last contract) . if you’re a colossal fan you’re already bought it, so for everyone else, rent it on DVD and listen to the audio commentary.

Years ago I spend to occupy the Police Academy box spot but had to sell the darn thing as I was a broke college student (those were shaded years) . The Police Academy films were never art but I enjoyed them for what they were - expressionless comedies with fun characters. Now I am joyful again because Warner Bros re-released the Police Academy films in 2 separate value packs (The first four are available in this collection called “4 Film Favorites: Police Academy 1-4 Collection” and the last three are in the area “4 Film Favorites: Cop Comedy Collection” packaged with Loaded Weapon 1) . The packaging of these value packs isn’t nearly as cold as the fresh releases (despite the dreaded snap cases) but overall the trace for these collections is unbeatable.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Police Academy 1-4 Collection: 4 Film Favorites! Click Here

All four films are presented on 2 double sided discs. I don’t like double sided discs as they are easy to injure but then again the brand makes me forgive this. Be warned though as the top of the second disc can advance with some scuffs because the drawer the first disc sits on rubs against the top of the second disc.

Warner Bros did screw up on the details on the encourage. The wait on states that Police Academy 1 is in 16X9 widescreen and is loaded with special features - the same as the special edition release. This is not factual. The edition they archaic for this DVD area is the fresh out-of-print pudgy veil edition. This didn’t upset me too poor because some of the sequels are also only available in fleshy conceal…however this screw up could originate a lot of buyers furious. You have been warned. This isn’t the first time Warner has screwed up on the details on the screen art. The Dirty Dozen/Kelly’s Heroes double feature proclaimed Dirty Dozen was anamorphic. It wasn’t. The 4 Film Favorites: Martial Arts release proclaimed the films were paunchy cloak and on double sided discs. They were actually widescreen and on single sided discs (for once a mistake in the favor of the purchaser!) . For people who need to know Parts 2 and 3 are anamorphic widescreen and Piece 4 is Bulky Shroud.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Police Academy 1-4 Collection: 4 Film Favorites! Click Here

There you go, Police Academy 1 ISN’T widescreen as proclaimed on the box and the discs are double sided….but for the note one can’t beat this collection. Get determined you engage up the second area to complete the series!

The first two reviews are correct: the version of the first film is the out of print fullscreen edition without the extras. However, the rest are the same as the released versions, along with Police Academy 4 quiet being (bafflingly so) a fullscreen version.

These movies certainly won’t appeal to everyone, but I personally found them refreshingly different, arresting and very delectable. Whether or not you will relish them depends not only on personal taste but also what you intend to regain out of seeing movies. If you’ve dismissed movies such as David Lynch’s “Eraserhead” or “Lost Highway” as ‘arsty pretentious rubbish’, these won’t be the films for you. The directing draws attention to itself (especially in “Talking Head”), which means if you unprejudiced want to be told a legend, you’re already missing the point. These can be seen as ‘experiments’ in movie-making, and the results are very spellbinding, provided you’re into that sort of thing.

Understandably, some people may be fervent in these movies because of the connection to the Oshii-written anime “Jin-Roh”. Don’t request a similar film, or remarkable relation to it. At first, these films seem to have petite relation to each other, let alone other films. Don’t question action, either. There are occasional action scenes, though if that’s why you’re watching the film you’re once again likely missing the point.

It occured to me that “The Red Spectacles” is, in a plan, a parody of itself. Any event or aspect of the storyline that may have been slightly far fetched, comic, or seen as a mistake in a normal film, is made very deliberate, exaggerated and displayed in an over-the-top manner that is somewhat remeniscent of comedic anime.. yet it doesn’t feel out of region. It seems to fit apt into the world Oshii has created in the film.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mamoru Oshii Cinema Trilogy Collection! Click Here

“Stray Dog” is a mellow, aesthetically pretty film, rich in color, which is a startling disagreement to the schizofrenic “Red Spectacles”, which was predominately in murky and white, and generally far from mellow. If you’re not a fan of dumb movies, or are expecting some action, you’ll likely peek at the time an hour into the movie and be amazed that seemingly nothing’s happened yet. This isn’t actually the case, of course, and while the film may be less complex, and generally less active, than the other two in the series, it collected has plenty of ideas to announce. This is the film that probably has the most in accepted with Jin-Roh, but again, don’t inquire of the same film.

“Talking Head” defies convention even more than “The Red Spectacles” did, and presents a memoir about filmmaking fat of bizarre characters and events, and commentary on various aspects of the art. This should be curious viewing for appreciators of ‘arty’ cinema, not unprejudiced for it’s daring direction and quirkiness, but also for the ideas expressed about the medium of film (and more specifically, animation), and the creative process.

I’ve long appreciated Oshii’s tantalizing works (such as Patlabor 2, Ghost in the Shell and Jin-Roh), and was very eager to peek his live action films. Between his anime films, these films, and the absolutely aesthetic “Avalon”, Oshii has shown diversity and fresh vision, and has more than earned a residence among the giants of cinema.

I loved these movies and the soundtrack that came with them. Mamoru Oshii is a genius but there were quite a few flaws that kept me unsatisfied. I wouldn’t recommend these for everyone but only for those who like Oshii and anime. If you do it’s a definate win!

  • UV protector
  • Circular polarizer
  • 77mm diameter
  • 812 color warming filter

Customer Reviews:

Vignetting3
While this filter kit does a fine job with doing the filtration these 3 filters were designed for, you can be guaranteed that when you use them on wide angle and ultra-wide angle lenses you will get vignetting. Vignetting is the darkened areas around the edges of your photographs. This is caused because these particular filters have threads in front of the filter glass which partially block the light coming into wide angle lenses when set at their widest setting. I normally like this type of filter because it allows me to replace the lens cap, thus allowing me to leave the filter on the camera’s lens all the time - one of the prime reasons I like the UV lens - lens protection. The alternative is to purchase an ultra-thin lens which doesn’t have the threads on the front, doesn’t cause vignetting, but doesn’t allow you to replace the lens cap. So, as you can see there is a trade off. Do you want to leave the lens on the front when you put the camera away for the moment, but have to remove your filter as well….what a pain at a sporting event or where you need your camera to be ready all the time. Or, do you want to be able to replace the cap on the front and protect the filter when you put the camera away or replace lenses, but realize you can’t shoot at your wide angle lens’ widest setting due to vignetting? Tough choice. I’ve done it both ways. There’s no real happy medium….just a choice.

Good value for average performance5
With these filters you pretty much get what you pay for. They have good solid construction, and offer great protection for the lens. Threaded in front and hold caps pretty well too, which is a plus. But, once you start becoming more demanding of quality and move into more “serious” direction, the shortcomings would become more and more evident and very hard to compromise on. My main issue with these is glare they produce in extreme lighting conditions (night photography or very bright light). Some vignetting (although not terrible) is also introduced. For these reasons I never stack them either.

I feel that for kit lenses and less expensive ones they do an excellent job hence the 5 star rating with price-benefit ratio in mind. However, if you’re using professional glass or feel that photography is something that you will be sticking to for a while consider doing a bit of research before committing to these.

Pros and Cons for Neutral Density5
The ND filter by Tiffen gets some light use (20%) on our outdoor shots. This allows us to darken the skies a bit if the sun is too bright. The graduated filter allows you to select which areas of your frame you want to darken because you can rotate it.

PROS

1. Good vibrant shadows.
2. Saves time from PhotoShop.

CONS

1. None yet.

The “bikers” are like Broadway demonstrate extras. The dialogue is embarrassingly unauthentic. Occupy me, nobody outside of 42nd Street ever talked like that, daddy-o. The narrative plays out like some kind of “B” Western with a horse shortage. The “town” even looks like a Western area made over for what somebody in Hollywood plan might be a fresh genre. There’s a café and a saloon rolled into one and a gal working there to rep the spy, and a town posse and a jail and a sheriff (father of the gal) and some “decent citizens” turning into vigilantes, and instead of outlaws we have “hooligans.” The bikers do everything but tie their bikes up to the hitching post after roaring into town as though to engage over.

Okay, that’s one level. On another level this should be compared to Rebel without a Cause (1955) as a mid-century testament to teen angst. Or to Blackboard Jungle (1955) with the spurious juvenile delinquency and the phony slang. Marlon Brando as Johnny Strabler, whose claim to fame (aside from being the leader of the pack) is that he stole a second-place biker trophy, stars in a role that helped to begin his career, not that his acting in this film was so sizable. (He was better in half a dozen other roles, for example., as Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire 1951, or as Terry Malloy in On the Waterfront 1954) . What stands out here is his tough-guy vulnerability with women: the irresistible microscopic boy playing expansive. In one sense, this is, despite all the men running around and the macho delirium, something very halt to ladies night out. It’s a period share savor epic, as lovely as a teenager’s heart.

Mary Murphy, who in my understanding really steals the indicate, is at the very center of the drama and the psychology (not to mention that she looks downright yummy in her cashmere sweater and stop fitting skirt) . She plays Kathie Bleeker, a miniature town girl whose heart yearns for something–anything–to rupture the tedium. Along comes Johnny to sweep her off her feet. Only he isn’t determined how. Furthermore, she has a problem: although she falls in care for with the wild one, she sees good through him. The scene that makes the movie begins with her jumping onto the help of his motorcycle (of course) and, after roaring down the night highway, they retire to what looks like a park. She is about a breath away from what conventional to be called swooning, but despite her fluttering heart, she sets him straight on who he is and how she feels and why. It’s like a woman talking to a wild boy. Then she falls to the ground and unprejudiced about caresses his motorcycle. It really hits home because she sees through all his pretense and exposes his vulnerability, but is vulnerable herself.

Lee Marvin plays the rival gang leader with a lot of showmanship and Robert Keith plays the ineffectual father. Fair about everybody else (including longtime LA sports anchor, Gil Stratton) amounts to an extra.

See this for a search for at mid-century psychology as seen through the eyes of Hollywood’s seduction machine, and especially for Mary Murphy (running in those heels) who, for whatever reason, never became a star.

I perceive at this film today through very different eyes than when I first saw it as a high-schooler in ‘54.

Of course a lot of it seems hokey now, and with estimable reason: the world is a far less innocent state than it was in those bucolic, Eisenhower, pre-R&R days.

Customer Reviews:

FS 22 Review5
Great camcorder. Lightweight, easy to use, great video. Took it on a 16 day cruise/tour one week after purchasing, and it met every need. Battery life exceeded 2 hours per charge, plenty to support a full day of touring. The entire trip still didn’t fill the 32GB internal memory (we recorded just over 5+ hours of the 7 hours available, all in best quality. Purchased and used a 16GB SDHC card for the still pix, and it worked beautifully also. Downsides? Extreme small size and light weight make controlling camera shake difficult, particularly when zooming; lack of viewfinder is a real detractor.

High Expectations3
I had high expectations for this camcorder. I did some research and dispite limited reviews I decided to purchase. It had all of the features that I required for a standard def camcorder, and I thought the price was fair. It had a long zoom and it was small, compact, and lightweight….almost toy like.

The quality of the video in bright light was great. Indoors is where the camcorder failed to impress me. In typical bedroom lighting the video was very very grainy and unacceptable. When zoomed out the video was extremely shaky, but a tripod would have helped. The deal breaker for me was the low light performance, and when I say low light I mean in a well lit room with a lamp and a 75 watt bulb.

I wanted to like this camcorder because of the Canon name and the features, but in the end the quality was not there especially for the price. I would not recommend this camcorder in situations where the lighting is not perfect.

Dual Flash Memory: 32GB Internal Flash Drive & SDHC Card Slot

What makes the FS22 stand out in the category of Flash Memory camcorders is its Dual Memory capability. You can capture video on both the camcorder’s 32GB internal Flash drive as well as onto an SDHC memory card.

Video stored on the internal memory can also be copied onto the memory card which can then be inserted into your computer or television’s card reader slot for immediate viewing.

Additionally, you can use higher capacity memory cards to further increase the video storage of your FS22.
*A Class 2 or higher card is recommended. Also, movie recording requires cards with 128MB of memory or more. Cards made by Toshiba, SanDisk or Matsushita are recommended. No particular restrictions apply for still images.

Ultra-Sleek, Compact and Lightweight Design

Making this technology even more convenient to use is the FS22’s compact size and light weight. Measuring only 2.2 inches wide, 2.3 inches high and 4.8 inches deep, it combines big video storage capacity in a small, easy to carry camcorder weighing only 7.9 ounces.

In addition to the advantage of added recording time, Flash Memory, as found in the FS22, offers more to you as well. You’ll appreciate its quick response time, because it doesn’t have to wait for moving parts. Press the record button and your FS22 starts recording video faster than you’ve ever seen before. In addition, when you review your footage, it will start playing more quickly as well.

Another plus is the FS22’s lower power consumption rate, allowing your battery to last longer. It’s just what you need so you don’t miss that pivotal play on the field or the moment when they say “I do.”

In the opening of her film, Daughters of the Dust, Julie Drag alerts the viewer that this is no ordinary African American epic. Conversely, this is an American history lesson with African origins. A tiny informative ticket at the launch of the film puts the entire movie in context. Without this explanatory foreword, many viewers would probably get the film hard to understand. Though the movie tells the yarn of the Peazant family’s migration from the sea islands of the South, the account also gives a panoramic plan of the Gullah culture at-large. Because the islands are isolated from the mainland states, the Gullah withhold a clear African ethnicity and culture. Ironically, the Peazants want to rid themselves of the passe ways and heritage, thus beginning an exodus from the islands to the mainland. Taking situation in 1902, honest fifty years after the demolish of slavery, Daughter of the Dust explores the Peazant’s struggle for survival and sprint from poverty. The movie opens on the eve of the family’s gigantic migration to the mainland. A family celebration and farewell-of-sorts acquire site on the beach. The Peazants even hire a photographer to document this momentous occasion. As the movie progresses, the complexity of the family’s departure from the island emerges. Dissimilarity and changing values mire the pending migration with conflict and strife. As the family prepares to leave, in search of a fresh life and better future, the film reveals the richness of the Gullah heritage. Narrations of “the unborn child” of Eli and Eula Peazant offer glimpses into problems the family has faced since their existence on the island. As explained by matriarch Nana Peazant, the Gullah are like “two people in one body.” Though most Peazants were born in the Americas, their African heritage is forever evident. The internal conflicts of this duality haunt the family as they become ensnarled in battle, only to war against themselves. Through aged African customs and rituals, such as glass bottle trees, salt water baths, and herb potions, Nana wants to ensure that the family stays together. Moreover, Nana, “the last of the former,” has chosen to halt on the island. She celebrates everything that makes her who she is: the plain and the honorable. She knows slavery and she knows freedom. Her life revolves around the continuation and strengthening of the Peazant family. Her rituals are often unappreciated and looked upon with scorn by other family members. Some family members are unwilling to purchase Nana’s teachings and wisdom. They want to elope the island, to urge away from the Gullah map of life. However, they cannot hurry from themselves. Honest as Nana proclaims, they will always live a double life, no matter where they go. The coast to the mainland certainly cannot rid their indigo stained hands of its blue-blackish tint. Nor can the northern crawl erase the memories of whom or what they are leaving. Unbeknownst to the younger Peazants, the duality, the recollections and remembrances, and the feeble design and traditions are gifts from their ancestors. Sadly, few are able to procure these gifts or comprehend their importance. Through authentic Gullah dialect, shining imagery and smart characters, Sprint reveals the uniqueness of the Gullah people. A cousin, Yellow Mary, returns from Cuba to the island, facing the scorn of her people because she is a “ruint `oman.” Haggar, a bitter woman who wants nothing to do with the frail Gullah ways, does not realize that she cannot rid herself of whom she is. For example, she despises the “extinct Africans,” yet retains their ways in her speech and expend of African colloquialisms. Another cousin, Viola is corpulent of Christian religious fervor and against the heathen practices and nature-worshiping traditions of her people. Eula, who gives a heart- wrenching soliloquy at the ruin of the movie, bears the burden of pregnancy and rape by a white man. Eli, Eula’s husband, represents the strength and future of the Peazant clan. Besides being adept at character development, Julie Breeze effectively educates the viewer about African-American history. Tales of flying Africans, water-walking Ibo, Islamic religion, and slave trading are skillfully woven in microscopic snatches throughout the film. We also peruse connections between African-Americans and Native Americans. The lessons learned from this film are too numerous. One must examine the film more than once to indulge in all the information presented. Daughters of the Dust awakens all the senses. The ravishing cinematography transports viewers to a surreal residence and time, creating a visual paradise. Each scene makes its introduction with mesmerizing African music, which aptly fits each setting. As the Gullah women prepare food for the feast, one cannot serve but imagine the taste and smell of gumbo, petite, and crab. This movie also arouses the heart. One can easily identify and empathize with the characters’ passion and sincerity. Often, the characters relay sentiments and convictions so convincingly, that it is hard to bear that the players were acting. Notion complete passages is often difficult because of the pretty and authentic tonality of the language. Nonetheless, the employ of standard English could not have conveyed Dash’s message as successfully. We should be pleased this film for its originality and courage. Stories such as these are hardly ever told. Most films neglect the eclectic nature of the African American community, usually focusing on only aspects that are familiar to the masses. Here, Julie Lag reaches beyond the boundaries that are residence for African-American films. Equally as considerable is her ability and willingness to validate the African-American experience. She eloquently and subtly deals with difficult subjects such as slavery, self-hatred, feminism, color prejudices, and rape. Straggle does not throw one viewpoint in your face. Conversely, Promenade gives the viewer a front row seat into the lives of a worthy people. We are then left to method conclusions for ourselves. One feels liberated, proud, and honored to be allowed a window into their lives. The movie is a celebration of the African-American diaspora. The images, language, and music of Daughters of the Dustwill linger in the minds of its fortunate viewers forever.

Julie Dash’s film “Daughters of the Dust” is a movie of such entertaining beauty as to leave you spellbound. It’s the tale of a Gullah family in the Sea Islands of Georgia, preparing to relocate to the mainland in 1902. The Sea Islands, as Julie Crawl tells us in the companion volume written for the film, were the Ellis Islands of the transatlantic slave trade, the dropping off point and processing center for the forced immigration of untold millions of Africans. Because of this, African cultural influences are more strongly rooted here than anywhere else in the United States. At the head of the family is Nana Peazant, a matriarch whose composed strength has seen her through slavery to the hard days of Reconstruction and beyond. Her children and their husbands and wives have decided to peep a future in the more unusual environment of the mainland. They’ve grown tired of the backwardness of the island and want to spread their wings. But as Nana, who resolutely determines to cease set, has foreseen, they can hold themselves from the island, but they can’t bewitch the island from within themselves, any more than they can select the indigo dye of the island from their hands; they are marked forever by a share of their culture that will never go away. Along with Nana, we meet Yellow Mary, a cousin who has returned from Cuba as a fallen woman, unconsciously clinging to her roots as hard as she tries to pull away from them; Haggar, a bitter, possessive woman who attempts to absorb onto her two young daughters, MyOwn and Iona (”I Contain Her”), even as they attempt to atomize away and execute their bear destiny; Viola, using her hidebound Christianity as a shield to cloak from her African heritage, and Eula and Eli, coping with the devastation of Eula’s rape and impregnation by a white man, whose Unborn Child is the narrator of this film. There is heartbreak for Nana, watching her family proceed from the home that has been theirs for generations, and for Haggar, whose daughter Iona decided to create her enjoy destiny by eloping with her Native American lover. Julie Skedaddle has managed to perform film so sincere and so evocative that it transports us lawful into the action; we are there on the beach, feeling the heat, smelling the gumbo cooking, and listening to the glowing tonalities of the Gullah dialect. The acting by all the characters is apt throughout, with special mention for standout performances by Cora Lee Day as Nana Peazant, Alva Rogers as Eula Peazant, and Barbara O. Jones as Yellow Mary; but the staunch star in this film is the lovely cinematography which is unlike anything I have ever seen in any film. The movie is so visually heavenly that one unprejudiced sits and watches awestruck. An equally strong script, well acted by the cast, gives the movie a depth and meaning that makes the film worth watching over and over. “Daughters of the Dust” is mighty more than a movie; it’s an emotionally charged history lesson of a slight known area and a tiny known culture. It remains inside you, a allotment of you, long after the final credits have ended.
